Chapter 1: Her death.
"Guy let's leave", Rose
said to me.
"Why? We just gotta leave here
na. I have not even be served the food I ordered. Infact what has this waiter
been doing since he took the order? I'm famished, I said in exhaustion.
"Babe, something is off".
Rose said looking all worried.
I rolled my eyes. Babe you have
started again with this your "something is
off" attitude. Is there ever a day you do not feel something is
wrong? I asked in frustration. I came here to eat and relax after a long day of
having to defend my project. So please don't stress my brain. As you can see
I'm tired and hungry.
Funmi, this case is different, I'm
actually really worried.“You sef sabi how robbery dey show face everyday for
this campus”, Rose said in pidgin.
Yes I do. So, what has that got to do
with "something being off"? That problem has already been solved by
the school management. Infact, most of the criminals involved in the case have
been apprehended and new security measures have also been implemented to
prevent such cases from arising again. Like you said it' was' rampant but not
anymore. So there's no cause for alarm, I said reassuringly.
"Well that's true. But those
guys we greeted on our way here, got me thinking. They looked so restless and
suspicious. Most especially that guy on red shirt. I hope they are not going to
rob our hostel." She said sipping the Coca-cola drink she had gotten
earlier.
Eeiii Roseline, you have got to stop
being paranoid, I said laughing. I hope so too sha. It wouldn't be funny if
they were robbers in disguise."
Exactly why we should go back and
confirm everything is fine. It's just a 5-minute walk from here. Besides that
waiter is taking too long to bring the food we ordered.
"Alright dear, let's go" I
said. We both stood up and left the mini-restaurant, we all visited, whenever
we felt too lazy to cook.
Yes, the "we all' part. Let me
introduce myself to you. I'm Tofunmi, a 400 level student of the department of
English, University of Beluma, Igodo Town and I'd like to share with you, how
campus has been, for me and will also be sharing, every other thing that will
be occurring as a finalist on campus. Yay! I'm so excited.
So, First, how has life been, as a
student of Beluma? My life has been so far good in the university. Although,
being a student of the University of Beluma comes with a lot of hard work. It
isn't a place for the lazy. However, I had little to no problem navigating
through my first, second, third and now fourth year, in the university. The
question that pops up is how? Well, I'm from a well-to-do family. My father, Mr
Ogunsina Bamidele, is also an influential person in the University. So I had and I have no financial
problem. My G.P? Currently I'm on first class and not because of my father's
connections, but because I'm a lover of books. I find joy in reading and
writing. So, coming out as a brilliant student, as I am, wasn't that hard.
Currently, I live in a private hostel
with 3 beautiful souls, I was blessed with, on gaining admission to the
university. These girls, Ajibola, Roseline and Mariam, have been a blessing to
me. I've learnt a lot from them. Most especially from Ajibola. Our group, to
me, is the real definition of friendship. To cut the long story short, life in
University of Beluma with these girls has been a blissful one and I hope it
continues like this...
"Buzzzz.." I heard my phone
ring, interrupting my conversation with Roseline as we were almost at the gate
of the hostel.
"Who's calling you?" Rose
asked not pleased with our conversation being interrupted.
Aunty, you too like to dey talk. Calm
down let me pick the call, I laughed, finding my phone in my purse. " You
see na Jibola dey call sef""Hello Jibola"
"Hello Funmi. Where are you guys
now? I heard Jibola's gentle voice from the other side of the phone.
"We are almost at the hostel
babe, I replied
" Alright. You guys should be
fast. I've got good news for you" she replied with obvious joy in her
voice. She hangs up.
Roseline e be like say Jibola don hit jackpot
o, I said.
" What did she say?" Rose
asked.
" Don't worry let's go" I
said pulling Rose by the hand, increasing our pace. This must be good news and
this time around Rose was wrong about something being off or may be she wasn't
cos something is off in a good way, I thought....
"Ahhhh!!! Jibola! Jibola!"
I heard Rose scream but it sounded far away.
My eyes were glued to the image on the floor.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I had come into the room before Rose
did but I was dead struck at what I saw.
I could not move. I was starting to find it difficult to breathe. It wasn't
looking real. No it can't even be real, I thought.
"Jibola!" I heard Rose
scream again and that was all I needed to come back to reality.
No, it can not be, I thought. Jibola cannot
be the one I am seeing in the pool of blood. No it can't, I said. No, it can't
be!! Jibola!! I screamed running to the image I was staring at all this while.
I fell on my knees pulling the lifeless body close to me. I tapped her. Babe
wake up, I said tapping her on the cheek. Tears were beginning to roll down my
cheeks. I wiped it off, staining my face with blood, her blood! I tapped her
again this time around with a little more force but Jibola wasn't responding.
I saw a stab wound close to heart. She
was bleeding profusely. She had been murdered! The words rang so loud in my
head. I tried applying pressure on her wound. She could still be alive, I
hoped. Her eyes were wide open like she saw something before she was stabbed.
“Jibola wakeup!" I heard Rose. she was
trying to move Jibola's body, tears rolling down her cheeks. I also tried
shaking her, hoping she would wakeup. We both shook her again. But she wasn't
just responding. I held her face close to mine to see if she was still
breathing but she wasn't. Jibola wasn't responding. Ajibola had been murdered. Jibola is dead!!
Tears rolled down my cheeks as realization dawned upon me.
Who murdered her? Why was she
murdered? Who did she offend? I thought.
