Interview: Fresher of The Week

MEET NWAMODOH PRECIOUS, FRESHER OF THE WEEK

NAPS PRESS: Can we meet you?

PRECIOUS: I'm Nwamodoh Precious Oluwatosin a 100 level student of philosophy university of Ibadan.

NAPS PRESS: Why university of Ibadan? Why Philosophy?

PRECIOUS: I chose the University of Ibadan because I've always wanted the best things in life, to attend the best school, to simply be the best in all I do.  Well, philosophy chose me actually. I've always wanted to do law but I didn't meet the cut off mark but I've come to fall in love with philosophy. Philosophy has changed my worldview on a lot of this. I see things in a clearer picture now. Philosophy has granted me the gift of rational reasoning.

NAPS PRESS: As regards your answer to why you chose this particular university, why do you think University of Ibadan is the best?

PRECIOUS: It's simply the best!! Although it is known to be the oldest university in Nigeria, it is the first and the best. The university standard is very high and they've been known to produce the best students in Africa. We have a great alumnus like Wole soyinka e.t.c. I simply want to go to the school that is meant for the best of the best.

NAPS PRESS: Are you engaged in other things? If yes, what are they?

PRECIOUS: Of course!! I engage in other things. I am a fashion designer and a model. My fashion designing is on hold for now because I don't have a place to put my machine yet but I model! And it's not easy to be honest. My weekends are packed. I have to go for shoots early and come back in the evening. If I'm lucky, I will be back by noon, with these shoots comes leg cramps and body ache, so I take painkillers to knock me out so that I can be refreshed for the following day.

NAPS PRESS: How has it been balancing school or academics and other areas or other activities?

PRECIOUS: It’s not easy juggling it with school activities but I have a personal time table that I adhere to strictly and is in agreement with my work. So I'm good!

NAPS PRESS: In your little time in philosophy would you say it has improved the way you think? If yes, in what ways?

PRECIOUS: Philosophy has improved the way I think for sure. Like I stated earlier, it has changed how I view the world and perspective on certain things. I have been able to harness critical thinking in everything I do, and I have a firm mindset.

NAPS PRESS: A lot of people have so many misconceptions about philosophy and people studying it how would you react to these claims?

PRECIOUS: I remember the first time I told my friends that I'm studying philosophy. Their reactions were priceless! I got shock, surprise, concern, laughter sef, Tope thought I was telling a terrible joke! They were unhappy about it because they thought I would lose my faith. But, in recent times, they've realized that philosophy is beyond that, I believe faith is a personal thing, and a course cannot wave or take your faith from you!! That's a fallacy!!

NAPS PRESS: How has the experience been so far? In philosophy and the university at large

PRECIOUS: To be honest, It has been stressful, the pressure is real, and you have to study hard to have distinctions. And as for philosophy, I think I can grasp the concept of the course. It's more than what meet the eye. Philosophy is has to be studied critically and examined closely too. It's beyond reading, you have to comprehend the whole idea or you'll be lost in your head.

NAPS PRESS: Even when in your 4 years of philosophy you cannot study the philosophers and their philosophy but in your little time in philosophy, who is your favorite philosopher and which of their philosophy is your favorite?

PRECIOUS: Socrates is my favorite. I love his philosophy on how the true rulers or kings should be philosophers. Because they're knowledgeable, in pursuit of truth, can comprehend the concept of truth, and is not material. These are qualities that are absent in our leaders today. It's the concept of "every man for himself"

NAPS PRESS: What branch of philosophy do you find interesting or fascinating and why?

PRECIOUS: Epistemology!!!! The theory of knowledge. I find epistemology interesting because I've always been on the quest for knowledge for as long as I can remember. I'm a curious person so I have always wanted to know to what extent is something true.

NAPS PRESS: If you were given the opportunity, would choose philosophy again and why?

PRECIOUS: Yes. Even though philosophy is not a defined professional job, I would choose philosophy, because it is a high minded craft. We need true philosopher in the society, perhaps the world would be a better place, just like Socrates I believe that until philosopher become kings or rulers “there would be no justice, truth, or good"

NAPS PRESS: What was your first impression when you got UI? Did it meet your expectations and was it worth the 'hype' as the first and the best?

PRECIOUS: I was glad!!! Because it's such a hassle to get in here!!!You have to study hard, work hard and pray hard!! Being in UI is an evidence of not stupid. Yeah! It was worth the hype. I brag about it all the time. UI produces the best but at the same time, we can do better. There are a lot of infrastructures that the varsity needs to put on place to aid students; I can't blame them because the government are not helping either. But we can try!!

NAPS PRESS: A lot is going on in school, in country and around how do you stay motivated? What motivates you?

PRECIOUS: I pray a lot to God, to give me strength, to help me stay focused, to continue to protect and guide me, to light my path. I do not worry because I'm a man in Christ!!

NAPS PRESS: Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

PRECIOUS: I do not see myself in a certain place. I am a bird; I go with the wind. I have multiple options but where ever I find myself, I would surely be the best, because I am a product of the University of Ibadan. I am ambitious and goal driven. And the goal is to simply become the best no matter what comes my way.
