Opinion: A wrong choice of words from NAPS President?

"Some of us only know how to write exams and pass with A(s), but we are not philosophical enough. Some of us do not understand deeply the concepts of our philosophy courses, yet we manage to pass exams with A(s)." These were the words of the President of the National Association of Philosophy Students during the just concluded Congress that held on the Tuesday, 6th December 2022.

Maintaining consistently high grades means one thing, that the individual involved is not just good at writing to pass exams, but can also engage in reasonable, intellectual and philosophical discussions and arguments.

This is because no lecturer in the department of philosophy awards high grades to students simply because they have crammed and have written to fill their exam booklets and even collect extra sheets during exams, rather, marks are awarded based on how well and critically such student must have addressed the exam questions, and for a student to consistently remain within the "A" grade range despite this parameter means that such student is good, and exceptionally so.

Back to the quote from the president, students who have managed to make consistent A(s) do not just do so because they know how to cram and write to pass exams well, but also because they deeply understand philosophy at its core and are intelligent enough to engage in philosophical discussions and other philosophical activities.
