ON A VERY UNTIMELY DARKNESS AND DROUGHT
This first picture perfectly depicts the present state of affairs in the University of Ibadan and its environ. This unwarranted darkness began with a public announcement from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC); the circular released on the 6th of January, 2023 (barely three days before the blackout) stated that there will be power outage in parts of Ibadan metropolis. Unfortunately, this power outage does not only affect the university community but every other part of Ibadan that a UI student can ever think of residing in.
Talmabout "we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and assure our customers of improved supply as the maintenance exercise is aimed at increasing capacity of the existing lines". This "capacity increment" couldn't have happened at some other time? Students are finding it difficult to study for exams. There's no light. There's no water.
Really, this situation wouldn't have been so problematic if they actually sticked to their '8am - 5pm' blackout timeline. But no, Naija my Naija. This predicament cannot be more disheartening. Who reads in darkness? The past week saw zealous students spend the night under street lights, trying out the best possible means to study. Well, why not? Darkness will come and go, but UI exams? The same yesterday, today and forever - hectic.
As usual, the Student Union body however came with a near-perfect response:
"...The school has been working diligently to address the problem, which has resulted in the use of a diesel generator for a number of days. Unfortunately, the generator is currently experiencing issues and the relevant team is working to restore it. We understand that this interruption may cause difficulties and we want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time..."
Let's just hope that we actually see changes because we can't be in search of knowledge and constant search of the water to bath at the same time. Dat kain multitasking too choke.
