Double honour is awarded to a student who has successfully combined two disciplines together. In the words of a philosophy lecturer, Philosophy allows its students to combine with other disciplines; it is an agreement reached a long time ago, but over the years, philosophy students have preferred to do away with the stress of majoring in two courses. The difficulty of crossing to other departments and the question of what to do with philosophy has exhumed the corpse of course combination. With many students now interested in this programme, there is a need to guide them on how to successfully combine with other disciplines.
Start Early
Although, the course combination programme officially begins at the 200 level, make sure you have begun taking courses from the 100 level in the other department of interest. While it might still be possible for you to major in another department from the 200 level or 300 level, it is never easy. This is because you will have to go back to take courses in the previous levels in that department which equals to more workload and less me-time. It is smart to start combining from the 100 level.
Seek Guidance
Course combination may not be successful or could even hinder graduation if certain courses are not taken or passed. As a combining student, it is advised that you consult your HOD, course adviser or a student who is already combining. This will provide a hitch-free journey.
Make Known Clashing Periods
Clashing classes or exam periods of the other course of combination may occur. Ensure that you lodge your complaint early and with your parent department, that is, the department you were admitted into; in this case, it is the philosophy department.
Make It Official
Course combination is made official in the second year. It requires some registration with ITEMS. Visit ITEMS to get access to the Change of Course form online; fill it out online as a combined honours student then print it afterwards; ensure you have your passport in handy to staple to the form. Make copies and distribute for signing in the Admissions Office, Faculty, Department and back to ITEMS. Having done the aforementioned, give your due diligence to whatever courses you have registered for and pray too. As long as you are focused and making the right decisions, you are just a step away from successfully graduating with a double honour degree.
