The Battle of the Super Eagles and the Elephants

By Oluwadamilare Awolowo

The Bouake stadium (Peace Stadium of Bouake, IvoryCoast), experienced an historic moment yesterday, 7th of February, 2024. Where the Nigeria's Super Eagles went head to head against the South Africa's Bafana Bafana in the semi final match of the 2024 Afcon competition. As though it was an end of the road moment for the Bafana Bafanas, but it was rather a great and memorable moment for the Super Eagles players and their fans at large.

The heroic saves from the Super Eagles goalkeeper (Nwabali) and the last penalty strike of Kelechi Iheancho (popularly known as Seniorman Kels) during the penalty shootout, saw to the qualification of the Super Eagles into the final stages of the Afcon competition. They will be facing their once defeated opponents, (The Elephants of Ivory Coast) in the group stages again in the final, which last happened in the 2013 Afcon competition.

During this time, the Super Eagles played the "Les Etalons" of Burkina Faso both in the group stages and in the final, the Super Eagles would beat them to win their last Afcon competition.

It is never too early to say history could repeat itself again in favour of the Super Eagles when they face The Ivorian Elephants in the finals on Sunday, 11th of February, 2024. All the players and fans anticipates a win in the finals against the host nation, which could be a perfect unbeaten run for the Nigeria's Super Eagles in the 2024 Afcon competition.

It's safe to say, we shall see!
